Our Voice, Our Future: The Mexican-American Vote
Since June of 2015, Mexican-Americans have been singled out by Trump as criminals, and his administration have been intentionally damaging our reputation, our emotional health, our families, and our economy. Recently, the administration has expanded the attacks to include all Latinos.
The Mexican-American community has endured a legacy of segregation and racism since the 1830s, from the theft of our lands and lynchings to cyclical "racial cleansings," including the deportation of 2 million people in the 1930s and the mass expulsions of the 1950s. Historically, California has been one of the most hostile states toward Mexican-Americans and Latinos. IT IS TIME TO ACT!
While the brunt of this history has targeted Mexican-Americans, all Latinos in the Southwest inherit this abuse. We invite all Latinos to work together: what affects one, affects all. It is time to show the power of our vote and demand the respect we have earned over 200 years.
California Governor candidates from both parties are ignoring the severe damage our community is experiencing. Not even mentioning it, or offering a plan to help our community heal. Acting as if it is not happening, or like we don’t matter.
Our Community Is at Risk
Republican candidates Steve Hilton and Chad Bianco, Trump sympathizers, are currently leading the polls in the California Governor race. Imagine the consequences of that.
The Power of Our Numbers
1 in 4 California registered voters are Mexican-American.
Over 7 million California registered voters are Latino (80% Mexican-American).
The Problems We Face As A Community
Our community is hurting. Latino businesses are suffering because Latinos are scared, even US Citizens have to carry passports in fear they will racially profiled. This damage is intentionally pushing our community down economically, socially and emotionally. It’s having a devastating effect.
